Aside from the usual babysitting, dog walking, and lawn mowing jobs that teens often do, did you know that <em>young<\/em> teens can actually earn a paycheck?<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align:left\"><em>They can!<\/em> According to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dol.gov\/general\/topic\/youthlabor\/agerequirements\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Fair Labor Standards Act<\/a>, 14 is the minimum age for non-agricultural employment with limits to the number of hours they can work and jobs they can do. For <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youthrules.gov\/know-the-limits\/14-15.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">14 and 15 year-old employees<\/a>, ALL work must be performed outside of school hours <em>and<\/em> they may not work:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>More than 3 hours on a school day, including Friday.<\/li>\n<li>More than 18 hours per week when school is in session.<\/li>\n<li>More than 8 hours per day when school is not in session.<\/li>\n<li>More than 40 hours per week when school is not in session.<\/li>\n<li>Before 7AM or after 7PM on any day, except from June 1st through Labor Day, when night-time work hours are extended to 9PM.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>In some states, teens may need to obtain a work permit to legally be able to work. The best place to find out if they\u2019ll need working papers is via the school guidance office or the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dol.gov\/whd\/contacts\/state_of.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">state department of labor<\/a>.
